Com-Pac Picnic Cat Sailboat

The Com-Pac Picnic Cat

A delight to sail

The Picnic Cat is a 14-foot gaff-rigged catboat that is a pure delight to sail.

The Picnic Cat comes from the drawing board of Clark Mills, designer of the Com-Pac 16 CB, the Com-Pac Sun Cat, and the Com-Pac 23/3, and well known also as the designer of the Optimist Pram and the Windmill One Design.

Unlike her sister Com-Pacs, the Picnic Cat has a centerboard rather than a keel. With her centerboard up she is beachable. Her broad hull form and the low center-of-effort of her gaff-rigged sail make her very stable. And her huge self-bailing cockpit and ample stowage offer unsurpassed comfort in a small yet stable and easily handled package.

She's built of solid, hand-laid glass, with aluminum spars and a stainless steel centerboard that retracts into a stainless steel trunk. In addition, the exclusive Mastendr mast raising system revolutionizes the trailer-boating experience, making it easy to rig and launch the boat in as little as 5 minutes.

Hull and Deck

In the water, her stability comes from broad hull form and low-center-of-effort gaff-rigged sail plan.

The centerboard and centerboard trunk in the Picnic Cat are made of stainless steel. This unit is a subassembly that is built in Com-Pac's machine shop and then installed in the bottom of the Picnic Cat. By building the unit at their own shop, Com-Pac is able to build every one the same and stay within machining tolerances vs. the large tolerances required for a fiberglass assembly. Also, the stainless steel centerboard assembly is much stronger and many times less susceptible to damage than traditional fiberglass centerboards. The trunk is fitted over with a varnished solid mahogany box in the finished yacht.

White hull, tan deck and cockpit are standard.

Sturdy stainless outboard bracket on transom

Kickup rudder with laminated mahogany and ash tiller

Bronze mooring cleats

Stainless gunwale striker plate

Spars, Sails & Rigging

Mastendr quick rig sailing system is standard equipment.

Setup and retrieval are effortless - a matter of less than 5 minutes -- because gaff, boom, sail and hinged mast remain on the boat while trailering, as do the shrouds.

All that's necessary at the launch ramp is to raise the mast, attach the headstay with the quick release lever, and sail off. It's as simple as that.

Cockpit

Large self-bailing cockpit

Other Features

On the road, the mast, gaff and boom stow securely on the boom gallows, assuring worry-free trailering. Unlike a sloop's, her mast, because it steps in the bow of the boat, does not extend beyond the end of the boat when folded to horizontal. It rests securely on the boom gallows.
